TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Southern Illinois baseball fell in its series opener, 6-5 in 10 innings to No. 22 Indiana State Saturday afternoon on the road in Terre Haute. The Salukis fell to 23-15 overall and 10-3 in Missouri Valley Conference play while Indiana State moved to 24-12 and 12-1 in Valley action.
It was a high-caliber game throughout as both teams made rallies and had strong pitching efforts. Indiana State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to a pair of home runs in the first two innings. Randal Hernandez put the Sycamores on top early with a solo shot in the first before Seth Gergely pushed out a two-run home run in the second to give preseason All-American pitcher Matt Jachec an early cushion on the mound for the Trees.
Southern battled though as Bennett Eltoft cashed in two runs on a two-out single to right in the third inning of action, scoring Nathan Bandy and Mathieu Vallee reached on a walk and single, respectively.
Trailing 4-2 in the seventh, centerfielder Mathieu Vallee connected on Southern's lone home run of the day with a three-run blast to right field to put the Salukis on top for the first time in the game. It was the Saint-Joseph-Du-Lac, Quebec native's first home run of the season and also signaled the end of the day for Jachec.
The Sycamores wasted no time tying the game up as Austin Pottinger drove in the fifth run of the day for INS in the bottom of the seventh. Indiana State's Cameron Holycross was lights out coming out of the bullpen, allowing just one base hit in the final four innings of the game while fanning five Salukis at the plate.
Indiana State would score the winning run in the 10th on an errant throw to third on a bunt play by the Trees, allowing Pottinger to come around and score from second and give Indiana State its 12th-straight victory.
Jordan Bloemer pitched 3.2 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out five. Scott Harper allowed just one run in 2.2 innings while Paul Bonzagni pitched the final 2.2 innings and was hit with the loss, falling to 7-3 on the year.
Eltoft and Ryan Rodriguez tallied two hits each for Southern Illinois to lead the way. Indiana State outhit SIU 13-8 on the day.
Geregely and Pottinger led the Sycamore offense with three hits apiece. Gergely drove in three of Indiana State's six runs. Jachec struck out six and allowed five runs in six complete innings.
