Saluki Rally Falls Short as SEMO Splits Season Series

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southern Illinois had the bases loaded in the ninth inning, but Southeast Missouri was able to close the game out to win their first game over the Salukis in six seasons, 6-2, at Capaha Field Tuesday night.
The Salukis (23-18) struggled offensively up until the ninth inning when the Dawgs recorded three of their seven base hits in the contest. Steven Loden and Bennett Eltoft led off the inning with singles before the Redhawks went to their closer Kyle Miller to finish the game.
Miller punched out a batter before Mathieu Vallee loaded the bases with a bunt single but that would be all the Salukis would get off the hard-throwing right-hander as SEMO extended Southern's losing streak to four games – tying the season high for the Dawgs.
Southeast Missouri (23-19) jumped out to an early lead in the first when Chance Resetich hit a two-run home run. Schark would get SIU on the board in the second when he drove in Cole Christman on a single to right to cut the SEMO lead in half.
Pier-Olivier Boucher tied the game an inning later with his 11th home run of the year.
Southern got all it could have asked for from starting pitcher Tanner Perry (1-2) on the mound as the team played its fourth game in as many days. Perry was strong on the bump, recording a season-high five innings and allowing just three runs on three hits while striking out a trio of Redhawk batters.
Southeast broke the tie in the sixth after Brett Graber singled in two runs with the bases loaded. The Redhawks added two insurance runs in the eighth.
Scott Harper pitched an inning of work in the sixth, giving up one run before Sam Replogle pitched the seventh and eighth innings, allowing two runs and striking out two.
Payton Lawrence (3-0) picked up the win for the Redhawks after going 6.1 innings and striking out seven.

SIU will play host to Illinois State beginning Friday at Itchy Jones Stadium. First pitch with the Redbirds is set for 6 p.m. and admission is free.
