Saluki Rally Falls Short as Illinois State Even Series Saturday

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois baseball put the winning runs in scoring position in the ninth inning but fell short as Illinois State evened the series with a 5-4 victory Saturday at Itchy Jones Stadium.
Matt Schark and Bennett Eltoft picked up singles in the ninth. Eltoft swiped second to move both runners into scoring position before Illinois State's Elijah Dale closed out the game for his fourth save.
The Salukis (24-19, 11-6 MVC) had 12 hits but stranded nine baserunners in the game. Ryan Rodriguez led the team with three base hits while Steven Loden, Eltoft and Schark added two hits apiece.
Southern jumped in front early with a three-run first inning courtesy of four hits base hits. Ryan Rodriguez drove in the first two runs in with a single to center before a fielding error at third base allowed the third run to score for the Salukis. SIU added their fourth run in the third on a sacrifice fly in the third.
Illinois State began their rally in the fifth with a two-run home run off the bat of Auggie Rasmussen to cut the SIU lead to 4-3.
The Redbirds (16-23, 5-12 MVC) tied the game in the seventh before pushing across the go-ahead run in the ninth inning to even the series.
Tanner Lewis tossed five innings in the start, allowing three runs on four hits while retiring seven on strikeouts. Shane Wilhelm pitched a scoreless sixth inning before Scott Harper surrendered the tying run in the seventh. Paul Bonzagni took the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the ninth, falling to 7-4 on the year.
Cameron Mabee pitched six complete in the start for the Redbirds, allowing nine hits and two earned runs. Erik Kubiatowics pitched two innings out of the bullpen and allowed just one hit.
Rasmussen had a team-high three hits for Illinois State, including two RBIs.
