MURRAY, Ky. – A two-run eighth innings for Murray State was the difference as the Southern Illinois baseball team dropped its series finale with the Racers 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The No. 3 Salukis will matchup with No. 4 Evansville in the opening round of the MVC Tournament Wednesday morning in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Murray State (29-26, 14-13 MVC) would score their first run of the game in the third inning thanks in part to a fielding error aided by a wild pitch. Drew Vogel would put MSU ahead with an RBI single to left field.
It was the fifth inning when Southern (30-25, 15-12 MVC) would finally plate a run as Kaeber Rog hit his fourth home run of the season to tie the game at one. An inning later, Rog would deliver the second run of the game for the Salukis on a single to center field to bring home Bennett Eltoft.
In a scheduled staff outing, the Salukis picked up strong pitching from several hurlers throughout the game up until the eighth when Murray State took advantage of three walks and a pair of base hits. After a one-out single, the Racers would work a pair of walks from SIU reliever Sam Replogle to load the bases forcing a pitching change.
Scott Harper would get two strikes on Carson Garner before he connected on a ball sent through the left side to plate the go-ahead runs.
Nathan Holler would close out the game in the ninth by retiring the Salukis in order to help the Racers secure the series win. He improved to 2-1 on the season.
Pier-Olivier Boucher and Rog had two hits each to lead the Salukis who finished with six hits total.
Jake Combs struck out three in two innings in the start. Ben Riffe did not allow a hit in two innings of relief work, retiring two Racers on punchouts. Replogle allowed two walks and a hit in the eighth as he took the loss for Southern falling to 0-1 on the season.
