
Salukis Even Weekend Series with Saturday Win at Valpo

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Southern Illinois baseball scored three runs in the final three innings of action to secure a 7-3 victory over Valparaiso Saturday afternoon on the road at Bauer Field to even the series.
Trailing 3-2 in the fifth inning of play, Pier-Olivier Boucher belted his 14th home run of the season – a two-run shot – to give Southern Illinois a 4-2 lead and the Salukis never looked back.
Senior reliever Matthew Steidl put together one of his strongest outings of the season, allowing just one base hit in three and a third innings of work on the mound. He was extended to 62 pitches in the outing and was subbed out in the ninth inning after striking out five and allowing just two walks.
The Salukis added insurance in the seventh and eighth innings, first with an RBI single from Bennett Eltoft before Matt Schark drove in two in the eighth with a double down the line in left.
Steven Loden connected on his 15th home run of the year in the second inning to give SIU an early advantage. The home run moved the second baseman into the top-5 in single-season home runs.
The Beacons answered SIU's early lead with a three-spot in the third inning, scoring the runs on four base hits and a walk. Two of the runs came with two outs on the scoreboard.
Following the scoring outburst, Saluki starter Tanner Perry was able to settle in and pitch the minimum. The southpaw went five innings, allowing three runs and striking out four as he moved to 3-2 on the season. Scott Harper collected the final two outs of the game to pick up his second save of the year. He struck out one of the two batters he faced.
SIU outhit the Beacons 10-8 in the win led by Boucher, Eltoft and Schark with two hits each.
Nolan Tucker was the lone Beacon to have multiple hits.
Nathan Chasey fell to 1-3 on the season after giving up the go-ahead run in the fifth inning. The right-hander allowed four runs on five hits but issued three walks in his outing.
