NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Southern Illinois University women's soccer team saw its season come to an end Thursday, falling to Indiana State 2-1 in the opening round of the MVC Tournament.
Indiana State scored 58 seconds into the first half, taking an early 1-0 lead against the Salukis. Southern Illinois responded in the 15th minute when Maycie Massingill netted her third goal of the season, tying the score. Just 10 minutes later, the Sycamores found the back of the net again, taking a 2-1 lead in the 25th minute. The Salukis outshot Indiana State 8-3 in the first half.
In the second half, Southern Illinois and Indiana State maintained a tight back-and-forth, but neither team could convert on opportunities. Sierra O'Grady and Guliana Balistreri each recorded dangerous shots on goal, trying to score the equalizer but were ultimately stopped by Indiana State. The Salukis were unable to level the score before time expired.
With the win, Indiana State will move on to face Belmont on Sunday, Nov. 3.
The Salukis end their season 6-7-5 overall and 2-5-3 in conference play. This marked the second time in program history that Southern Illinois has reached the postseason.
