VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (2-8 overall, 0-1 conference) opened up Missouri Valley Conference play with a 69-51 loss at Valparaiso on Sunday.
Gift Uchenna scored 21 points and had 21 rebounds, which is tied for the second most rebounds in a single game in program history. The 21 boards are the most an SIU player has had in a game since Dyana Pierre also had 21 on Nov. 21, 2015, against Tennessee State.
Se'Quoia Allmond scored 11 points and was the lone other Saluki to score in double figures on Sunday.
Valparaiso out-shot Southern Illinois, 47% to 32%, from the field and, 45% to 7%, from deep in the Valley opener.
It was a fast start for the hosts on Sunday, as Valpo scored 21 points and went 4-of-9 from three-point range in the opening quarter. SIU had a .278 field-goal percentage in the first 10 minutes, scoring 15 points. Uchenna led the way with eight first quarter points.
The Salukis were able to slow the Beacons' offense down in the second quarter, holding them to 15 points on 37.5% shooting. Southern was unable to capitalize on the other end, however, scoring 11 points to go into the halftime break down by a score of 36-26.
Uchenna had 15 points and 11 rebounds in the first half.
The Beacons' largest scoring output came in the third quarter, as the hosts scored 22 points as opposed to Southern Illinois' 15. Valpo was highly efficient in the quarter, shooting 57% from the field and 60% from beyond the arc to take a 58-41 lead into the fourth.
Both teams struggled offensively in the final 10 minutes of action, as Valpo out-scored SIU, 11-10, to win by a final score of 69-51.
The Salukis, now 2-8 overall and 0-1 in Valley play, will host Murray State on Thursday, Jan. 2, at 6 p.m. in its first game in 2025.
