NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Southern Illinois basketball couldn't slow down Belmont Wednesday night as the Bruins took down the Salukis 82-68 inside the Curb Event Center in Nashville.
Ja'Kobi Gillespie led all scorers with 29 points on 12-for-16 shooting as he led the charge for a Belmont squad that finished the game shooting 50 percent (29-58).
Xavier Johnson passed Bryan Mullins (154) for the top spot on SIU's single-season assist leaderboard with four dimes in the game.
Gillespie led the way for Belmont in the first half with 14 points while Trent Brown had a team-high nine for the Salukis, including a shot clock buzzer-beater just before halftime. Scottie Ebube was a force off the bench for SIU as the big man scored six points on 3-of-4 shooting in seven minutes.
Trailing 37-31 at intermission, the Salukis and Bruins traded blows for the first seven minutes before Belmont reeled off an 11-2 run at the midway point to take a 68-50 lead.
Brown hit a 3-pointer with 5:43 left in the second to cut the deficit to 12 points but that is as close as SIU would get as the Bruins were able to close out the win.
The Bruins were able to hold Johnson in check offensively as the Germantown, Maryland native scored 17 on 5-for-17 shooting. Brown added 15 for SIU while Troy D'Amico had 12 points, including a trio of 3-pointers to go with seven boards.
The Salukis outrebounded Belmont 41-37 in the game but lost the battle in the paint 38-32. Forward Clarence Rupert had eight points and 11 rebounds.
