MOLINE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (11-20) suffered a first-round defeat to Indiana State on Thursday at the Missouri Valley Conference tournament, falling by a final score of 66-54.
"I applaud our kids' resiliency," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "All of the adversity we faced all year, our kids have stuck together. That's what I'm most proud of."
Southern got off to the stronger start on Thursday in Moline, out-scoring the Sycamores, 13-12, inside the first quarter. The Salukis shot 42.9% from the field to begin the game.
Indiana State had its best performance of the day in the second quarter, as it scored 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Mya Glanton scored nine points on 4-of-4 shooting to lead the Sycamores in the frame.
On the other side, Southern Illinois posted 10 points on 3-of-13 shooting and went into the half down, 33-23. Senior Quierra Love, in her final game as a Saluki, opened the game with 11 points in the first half.
Offensively, the Salukis had their highest-scoring output in the third quarter, tallying 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and 2-of-4 shooting from deep. Sophomore Jaidynn Mason's 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting led the way for SIU in the quarter.
Southern's success on the offensive end ran out in the fourth, as the Salukis were out-scored, 18-9, in the final 10 minutes to lose by a final score of 66-54.
Love's 15 points were a team-high, followed by junior Paige Clubb's 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond-the-arc.
As a team, Southern Illinois shot 39% from the field and 24% from deep.
The Salukis finish the season with a record of 11-20 overall and 6-14 in MVC play. Indiana State will face No. 1 seed Drake tomorrow at 12 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
