Recap | Salukis Bounce Back Against Arkansas State, 9-3

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois bounced back with a 9-3 win over Arkansas State Wednesday night at Itchy Jones Stadium.
Trailing by two runs heading into the bottom half of the first, the Salukis (14-7) would send nine batters to the plate, scoring three runs and SIU would never look back. The first four Salukis would reach base capped by Cole Christman pushing in the first run on a bases-loaded walk.
Steven Loden tied the game with a sacrifice fly deep to right field before Mathieu Vallee forced in the third run after drawing a walk.
Back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Salukis in the second setting the table for Christman who connected on his second grand slam in as many games in the second inning to extend the SIU lead to 7-2.
After a two-run home run for Arkansas State (13-10) in the first, Saluki starting pitcher Jake Combs settled in to pitch four and a third innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked just one with just three runs allowed while improving to 1-1 on the season.
SIU relief pitchers Shane Wilhelm, Tanner Gerges and Anthony Pron combined to finish the final four and two-third innings allowing just one run with five punchouts.
Red Wolves starter Michael Finan allowed three runs in the first and was hit with the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season.
Trey Cutchen finished 4-for-5 at the plate to lead the Dawgs while Christman was 2-for-5 with five RBIs.
