CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois outhit Valparaiso 14-5 during a 13-1 run-rule victory Saturday afternoon at Itchy Jones Stadium to claim the series win over the Beacons.
Southern put a run on the scoreboard in each the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings of play to take control of the game. The Salukis used four home runs in the game from Jordan Bach, Bennett Eltoft, Cole Christman, and Steven Loden.
It was Eltoft who put the Salukis on top in the second after doubling to the gap in left to score Jake Allgeyer who led off the inning on second base after reaching on an error.
Bach, a Ladner, British Columbia native, connected on his first home run in a Saluki uniform in the third inning out to right field to double the Saluki lead to 2-0.
The Salukis put up crooked numbers in the fourth and fifth innings as Eltoft hit a two-run home run in the fourth – his second home run of the weekend – to extend the SIU lead to 4-0. Cole Christman started a four-run fifth with an opposite-field home run before Mathieu Vallee recorded a two-run double, and Nathan Bandy singled home a run to finish off a five-hit fifth inning for SIU.
Al Holguin allowed just four hits in five innings of work on the mound. The lefty struck out five and did not allow a run to improve to 2-2 on the season. Easton Dermody closed out the game for the Salukis with three innings to earn the save. Dermody allowed just one run and struck out four.
The Beacons got on the board in the seventh with a solo home run from Alex Ryan before Southern answered with five runs in the eighth. Bandy and Christman each drove in a run before Loden capped off the run-rule win with a three-run home run – his team-leading eighth home run of the season.
All nine Salukis in the lineup had a hit in the win with five barters recording two hits. Eltoft and Loden led the Salukis with two hits and three RBIs each.
Adam Guazzo took the loss for the Beacons falling to 0-3. The right-hander allowed six earned runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings.
Alex Ryan and Alex Thurston led the Beacons with two hits each.

The Salukis and Valpo will take to the field for the series finale Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
