CARBONDALE, Ill. – Mike Hansell worked six innings and struck out five batters as Southern Illinois baseball clinched the series victory over Houston Christian, 4-2, Friday at Itchy Jones Stadium.
The Salukis (9-5) jumped out to a three-run lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a wild pitch and a two-out, two-run single by Mathieu Vallee. That would be all they needed thanks to a strong day from the Saluki pitching staff.
Houston Christian (7-8) threatened to take the lead in the top of the seventh, putting the go-ahead run on second base with just one out in the inning. Clutch pitching from Ben Riffe kept the Salukis ahead 3-2 as we entered stretch time.
Jake Allgeyer added a key insurance run with an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to give the Salukis extra breathing room.
Hansell (2-1) put together his best performance of the young season. The right-hander pitched six complete innings allowing two runs, striking out five, and walking zero.
Reliever Anthony Pron (S, 2) faced the minimum in the final two frames, sealing the victory for Southern.
Houston Christian starter Parker Edwards (1-2) took the loss, pitching 3.2 innings. He struck out three and allowed three runs on six hits and surrendered three walks.
Trevor Roper paced the Huskies with two hits and an RBI.
