CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois baseball fell 3-2 in extras to Southeast Missouri State Tuesday at Itchy Jones Stadium. The loss is the fourth in a row after being swept by UIC the prior weekend.
The Redhawks (16-17) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning on a bases-loaded walk taken by Brooks Kettering.
The Salukis (19-14) struck first after Trey Cutchen hit a two-run single to left center in the bottom of the third.
It would be tough sledding from that point on for Southern's offense, as SEMO retired the next 23 batters faced.
SIU starting pitcher Alec Nigut did not allow a run through the first five innings of his start, but after loading the bases to begin the sixth, the southpaw was removed from the game.Â
Michael Mugan tied the game with a two-run single in the top of the sixth, and the Redhawks were threatening to take the lead. Saluki relievers Ben Riffe and Cole Koonce made clutch pitches to hold the Redhawks at bay as the game headed to extra innings.
Two walks and a hit-by-pitch were instrumental in loading the bases for SEMO in the 11th, and Tanner Gerdes' walk of Kettering would be all the Redhawks bullpen needed to secure the victory.Â
Kyle Miller won his second game of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth and tenth inning.Â
Gerdes took the loss for SIU after surrendering the go-ahead run.
SEMO outhit Southern 10-5, stranding 11 baserunners.
