Flames make quick work of Salukis with 3-0 sweep

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois Women's Volleyball was unable to claim a set against the UIC Flames Friday night in Davies Gym.
UIC controlled the contest from the very beginning, thwarting any hopes for the Salukis with short scoring runs to steadily increase their leads.
Set one was the most competitive of the night, with Saluki kill leader Kelly Franklin collecting five of her 13 kills in the frame. The Flames' longest run of the set was just three points in a row, but they kept the Salukis at bay, taking a 1-0 set lead, winning 25-20.
Southern took an early 7-3 lead in set two, but the Flames quickly crept back and took a 15-14 advantage at the media timeout. The Salukis never retook the lead, and UIC put Southern on the brink with a 25-19 set win and a 2-0 match lead.
UIC flexed its muscles in set three, as a 6-0 run all but put the Salukis away en route to the Flames completing the sweep.
Head Coach Brittany Harry complimented her team's ability to keep pace early in each set, but cited Southern's lack of scoring runs as the difference in the match.
"I thought we competed really well, going point-for-point at the beginning of each set," she said. "Kelly had another really good offensive night for us, but unfortunately, we just weren't able to sustain any real momentum in any of the lineups we tried tonight."
