FARGO, N.D. - The No. 8/9 Southern Illinois University football team (4-2, 1-1) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday at No. 1/1 North Dakota State as it fell by a final score of 45-17.
Turnovers hurt the Salukis in Fargo, as SIU lost two fumbles and threw one interception. Both fumbles came inside Bison territory, with the first being at the 18-yard line late in the second quarter and the other occurring at the NDSU 35-yard line early in the third.
"Those [turnovers] were crucial," head coach Nick Hill said. "The turnover right before half with a chance to go take the lead. Took some time off the clock, they weren't going to have much time left. That middle eight proved to be the difference."
North Dakota State out-gained Southern Illinois, 540-313, overall and 264-123 on the ground. Five of NDSU's six touchdowns were rushing scores.
The Salukis took the game's first lead on their opening drive. Southern got into Bison territory after quarterback DJ Williams found receiver Jay Jones for a 15-yard gain. Then, a combination of Williams, and running backs Chandler Chapman and Lem Wash moved the ball into field-goal range, where kicker Paul Geelen drilled a 35-yarder.
On their first play from scrimmage, Bison wide receiver Bryce Lance took a handoff for a 75-yard touchdown to put the hosts ahead.
After both teams traded punts, Southern Illinois put together one of its best drives of the game to close out the first quarter and begin the second. The Salukis got the ball to the opposing 5-yard line before Chapman ran it in to put SIU ahead, 10-7.
This was Chapman's fourth rushing touchdown of the season and third in his last two games.
A few possessions later, NDSU drove into Saluki territory but was stopped on 3rd-and-8, leading to a 38-yard field goal to tie the game at 10-10.
Southern Illinois was in the midst of a 12-play, 46-yard drive that lasted nearly five minutes before a Williams fumble gave the ball back to North Dakota State. It took the Bison five plays to take advantage, finding the end zone via a Cole Payton pass to Lance, leading to the hosts taking a 17-10 lead into the half.
The Bison got the ball first to begin the second half and made the most of it. The nation's top-ranked team got inside the opposing 5-yard line before Payton kept it himself for a 2-yard score.
Down 24-10, Southern Illinois quickly got into Bison territory after Williams connected with receiver Vinson Davis III for a 40-yard gain to the NDSU 35-yard line. After an incompletion, Southern's quarterback found Jones for 9 yards before the receiver fumbled at the NDSU 26-yard line.
North Dakota State made it a three-score game after Payton rushed for a 41-yard touchdown, giving the hosts a 31-10 lead.
After a pair of Bison touchdowns, Williams ran for a 3-yard score, his team-leading 10th of the season.
Williams finished with a line of 15-of-29 passing with 190 yards. On the ground, the senior quarterback ran 15 times for 41 yards and one touchdown. Chapman rushed for 31 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.
Jones and Fabian McCray each finished with 52 receiving yards.
Defensive end Vontrell Chairse recorded his third sack of the season in the loss, marking now three straight games with a sack for the senior from Chicago.
Safety Jagger Williams led the team with eight tackles on Saturday.
After the brief road trip, SIU will return home for two consecutive games, starting at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, vs. No. 12/13 North Dakota for the Blackout Cancer Game. They will then take on the University of Northern Iowa at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, during Homecoming.
