VALPARAISO, Ind. - Valparaiso swept Southern Illinois to conclude the Salukis' five-match road trip Saturday. The Beacons rarely trailed in sets one and two, and would finish the job in set three handing the Salukis their sixth loss in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Beacons were determined to stay out in front early and often, putting SIU in a deep hole early in the first two sets. Neither set win was dominant in the traditional sense, but Valpo steadily built up leads that the Salukis could not overcome.
Sam Warren was a problem for the Salukis, tallying 11 kills in the first two sets including the final point of set two to help Valpo to a 2-0 match lead. The senior hit .423 on the night and would collect 14 kills in totoal, leading her squad.
Freshman Julia Laidig was a key piece for Southern, tallying three aces on the night to go along with 12 digs as the team's libero for sets two and three. Her third ace of the night gave SIU an 8-5 lead in set three as Southern looked for some life to extend the match.
Southern's lead got as high as four, but the Beacons gradually chipped away and ended the match on four-straight points to sweep the Salukis.
Annabelle Sulish led the way with 9 kills for SIU, while freshman Addison Kerr tallied 12 assists.
