CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois Volleyball's win streak was snapped in a 3-1 loss to Indiana State Friday night in Davies Gym. Southern lost three sets by a combined seven points in a match they largely won on the stat sheet.
The Sycamores raced out to an early advantage, stretching as high as seven, but Southern Illinois fought back, tying set one at 22. Indiana State would hang on thanks to back-to-back kills from Kendall Curry.
Southern got off to a scorching start in set two, but six service errors in the frame kept the Sycamores around, and they eventually regained momentum as the set progressed. Harry pointed to those errors after the match.
"A pretty disappointing night for our locker room. We had more kills, higher hitting percentage, more digs and more blocks, but we also had 11 missed serves, which put a screeching halt to our momentum every time we gave a point away," Harry said. "The serve-pass game has to be won every night if you are going to walk away with a win in the league, and it was definitely our Achilles heel tonight."
The Sycamores would take full control of the match after a wild 26-24 set two in their favor.
An 8-0 run for the Salukis was key in its dominant set three victory. Larissa Seger tallied seven of her 13 kills in the frame, including the final two points.
In set four, neither team was able to get consistent offense going, but Indiana State made just enough plays to win the match in four.
Harry still points to the positives in the match, including the growing relationship between setter Emma Lade and the hitters.
"Despite the loss, I am still enjoying the connection built between Emma Lade and Kelly Franklin and Emma with Larissa," Harry said. "Those connections are getting better by the day and I am excited to see those drive our offense for the rest of the conference schedule."
Franklin led the Salukis with 18 kills, while lade collected 33 assists in the effort.
