EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Southern Illinois Women's Volleyball swept Evansville in its final match of the regular season on Saturday evening at Meeks Family Fieldhouse.
The Salukis came out fast in the season finale, racing out to a 9-2 lead early. The Purple Aces came back to tie the set at 13, but senior Cecilia Bulmahn led the charge in a 9-0 run that gave the Salukis plenty of breathing room. She had three of her team-leading 15 kills in the spurt as her team took a 1-0 advantage.
Set two ended up being maybe the most entertaining set of the season. Neither team was able to establish a sizable advantage, and the set quickly moved over 25 points. The frame would end up being Southern's longest of the season. The Purple Aces held the match point nine times, but could never put down the clinching point thanks to the fight of SIU. The Salukis had three chances of their own, but finally broke through on point 72 to win the set 37-35.
"The 37-35 score in the second set was probably the most intense set I have ever coached in — we faced several set points, but our kids just kept siding out and we finally got the edge and took it home," Head Coach Brittany Harry said. "That set really sums up how much this team has grown this season in their confidence and their refuse-to-lose mentality."
UE was determined not to get swept, building a slim lead as the set developed, but as they had done all night, Southern Illinois played its best volleyball late and scored nine of the last 11 points to complete the sweep. Emma Lade tallied the match point with an ace, capping off one of the best games of her senior season. The Howard Lake, Minn., native had 37 assists and 11 digs for a double-double, and added three blocks and three aces as well.
Bulmahn tallied a double-double of her own, adding 10 digs to her 15 kills.
"I told our kids before the match to enjoy it and have some fun, and it was just awesome seeing those girls play together and for each other one last time," Harry said. "I can't say enough good things about this team and these seniors; they are leaving some awfully big shoes to fill next year. Â Proud of the way Saluki volleyball finished, the future is bright."
