CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois controlled its match with Murray State from the very beginning and polished off a 3-0 victory over the Racers Friday night in Davies Gym.
The Salukis got out to a red-hot start early, never trailing in set one. Larissa Seger was the driving force with an ultra-efficient night, tallying five kills in the frame. The Brazil native would finish the night hitting .889, with eight kills on nine attempts.
The Racers took a lead to begin set two, but a 6-0 run from the Salukis put Murray State at arm's length, carrying a 15-8 lead at the media timeout. Seger put down the winning set point for the second time in the night, and Southern took a commanding 2-0 lead, winning set two 25-16.
Southern's fourth sweep of the season went out with an exclamation point thanks to senior Annabelle Sulish. With the score 15-10, Sulish put down a kill, which began a 10-0 Saluki run with her at the service line. The Knoxville, Tenn., native had six aces during the run, including a perfectly placed ball along the back line to clinch the sweep.
SIU had a historically efficient hitting night, hitting .437, the 10th best in a single match in program history. Cecilia Bulmahn continued to climb up the program leaderboards for digs, now ranking fourth with 1,378. Setter Emma Lade also tallied the 4,000th assist of her career.
