"We should have never been in overtime. There were three loose balls that we just looked at," head coach Scott Nagy said. "This is a game we flat-out should have won. Twenty-two turnovers, and we lose in overtime. I'm just sick about it."
After falling behind early, the Salukis rallied behind two clutch 3-pointers from senior Damien Mayo Jr. They carried a 36-32 lead into halftime and stretched the margin to nine early in the second half.
Richmond answered with a 16-0 run that was ended by a Quel'Ron House basket at the 8:42 mark. The Spiders held the lead until the final 15 seconds of regulation.
House drove coast to coast for a layup, drew a foul and converted the free throw to tie the game at 74. Richmond's final shot bounced off the rim, sending the game to overtime.
Southern Illinois struck first in the extra period when Rolyns Aligbe scored while being fouled to put the Salukis ahead 76-74. He missed the free throw, then fouled AJ Lopez on the rebound. Lopez sank both free throws, and Richmond never trailed again.
Rolyns Aligbe led SIU with 19 points and 11 rebounds. House added 17 before fouling out in overtime. Freshman Jalen Haynes scored in double figures for the fifth straight game with 12 points, and Mayo matched him with 12.
The Salukis struggled from long range, hitting just 4 of 13 3-point attempts. Mayo made three, and Aligbe added one. Sharpshooter Drew Steffe missed his lone attempt.
Richmond freshman Aiden Argabright fueled the comeback. After scoring just one point in the first half, he finished with eight in the second and nine in overtime. He also drew multiple offensive fouls, contributing to SIU's turnover problems.
The Spiders showcased their depth, using 11 players and placing six in double figures: Argabright, Will Johnston (17), Jonathan Beagle (14), Jaden Daughtry (12), Lopez (11) and Mikkel Tyne (10).
With the loss, Southern Illinois dropped to 6-5 overall and 2-5 away from home. Richmond improved to 9-1, including two wins against Missouri Valley Conference opponents after already beating Belmont.
The Salukis return to Banterra Center on Thursday, Dec. 18, to open MVC play against Illinois State. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m., with the game televised on the MVC Network. Tickets are available here.
