
Recap | Offensive Woes Continue for Salukis in 62-46 Loss to UIC on Sunday

CARBONDALE, Ill. - For the second consecutive game, the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (4-19 overall, 2-12 conference) was held to below 50 points as it fell to UIC, 62-46, on Sunday.
"The foul count got away from us and they did a tremendous job of knocking down 19-of-22 (free throw's), which gave them some separation in those quarters," head coach Kelly Bond-White said.
Neither team scored over 20 points in any of the four quarters during Sunday's game, with the Salukis being held to 15 or fewer points in each of the four frames. This included a six-point third quarter, which allowed UIC to expand its lead from 30-26 at the half, to 44-32 through three quarters.
Southern Illinois shot 32.1% from the field, 25.0% (3-of-12) from three-point range, and 53.8% at the free throw line in the loss. While UIC shared SIU's struggles from the field (38.0%) and from deep (31.3%), it made up for it at the charity stripe. The Flames went 19-of-22 (86.4%) at the line during their win in Carbondale, including an 8-of-10 third quarter.
The Salukis were out-rebounded, 41-30, and allowed 12 offensive rebounds on Sunday. Gift Uchenna was the lone Saluki to score in double figures, tallying 16 points in 32 minutes to go along with eight rebounds. Uchenna's streak of five-straight double double's came to an end in Sunday's loss.
UIC had a tied for game-high 18 points in the first quarter, with efficient three-point and free throw shooting leading the way. The Flames started the game 3-for-7 (42.9%) from beyond the arc and were a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line. SIU scored 11 points on 26.7% shooting from the field.
Southern's best quarter of the day came in the second, where it out-scored UIC, 15-12. The Salukis held the Flames to 35.7% field-goal shooting and 0-of-5 shooting from deep. Uchenna led the Dawgs with six points in the quarter.
SIU trailed, 30-26, at the halftime break, but its third quarter struggles continued against the Flames as they out-scored the Salukis, 14-6, in the third. Southern Illinois has been held to six points in the third quarter in back-to-back games.
The Salukis went 1-of-8 from the field in the quarter.
UIC's defense continued to shut down SIU in the fourth, as it out-scored the hosts, 18-14, to secure the 62-46 win.
Southern will begin a difficult four-game road trip on Thursday at 6 p.m. when it travels to Drake.
