CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois battled back from an early deficit but couldn't overcome Morehead State's late power surge, falling 6-4 on Sunday at Itchy Jones Stadium.
The Salukis (12-6) trailed 2-0 after the top of the first but responded with an unearned run in the bottom half when Jordan Bach scored on a muffed throw at first base. Morehead State (8-10) extended its lead in the fourth with back-to-back RBI doubles from Hayden Robbins and Griffin Olson to make it 4-1.
Southern Illinois answered in the fifth with a three-run rally to tie the game. John Lemm led off with a solo homer to right, cutting the deficit to two. Kaleb Hall followed with an RBI single to left, scoring Cecil Lofton, and the tying run came across when Gabe Petrucelli scored on a wild pitch.
The game remained knotted at four until the seventh inning when Hunter Thomas launched a solo home run down the left-field line to put Morehead State back in front. Thomas struck again in the ninth with another homer, this time to left-center, giving the Eagles a two-run cushion.
The Salukis were held scoreless over the final four innings by Morehead State's bullpen. Josh Furtado (2-0) picked up the win with two shutout innings in relief, allowing no hits while striking out one. Will Grimmett secured his first save of the season with two more scoreless frames, striking out two.
Meade Johnson (0-2) took the loss for Southern Illinois, allowing five runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out seven but struggled with command, issuing five walks.
The Salukis finished with eight hits, led by Lemm's 2-for-4 performance. Morehead State tallied 10 hits, with Thomas leading the way, going 3-for-5 with two homers and two RBIs.
