Recap | Offense stalls after hot start, Salukis fall in series opener at Murray State

MURRAY, Ky. - After a quick three runs to begin Friday's series opener, Southern Illinois was blanked the rest of the way and dropped the contest by a score of 8-3 at Murray State. The Salukis (31-14, 12-7 MVC) only mustered three hits after the first two frames.
Jordan Bach was the driving force of the early offense, hitting his eighth home run on the game's fourth pitch. He would reach base in four of his five at-bats.
The Dawgs added two more in the second after Matt Schark drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Gabe Petrucelli hit an RBI single to right.
The Racers struck back quickly, taking the lead after two runs in the second and third. Left-hander Alec Nigut (L, 7-2) was removed after two innings, allowing four earned runs in his 11th start.
Murray starter Nic Schutte (W, 5-3) would settle in nicely, allowing just two baserunners over the next four innings to secure a quality start.
Dylan Petrey threw his longest outing of the season for Southern, pitching a season-high 4.2 innings and throwing 81 pitches while allowing two earned runs.
The Racers methodically added runs as the game progressed and built a five-run lead by the ninth inning, a deficit too much for the Salukis to overcome on this night.
Dylan Zentko and Graham Kelham shut down SIU in the final three frames after Schutte's exit.
UP NEXT
The two squads take the field again on Saturday with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.
