Recap | Xavier sweeps SIU to close weekend

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Southern Illinois fought hard with Xavier in sets one and two, but suffered excruciating losses in both, leaving little energy for set three, in which Southern was swept. The loss marked a 1-2 record for the weekend and puts the Salukis' record at 4-5 on the season.Â
In a wildly entertaining set one, both teams had opportunities to put the other away, with 10 lead changes being exchanged. Southern had Xavier on the ropes with a 25-24 lead, but three straight kills from the Musketeers helped them steal the set and take a 1-0 lead.
SIU led 14-13 in set two, but a quick 4-0 run from Xavier propelled them ahead enough to hold off a late SIU run to take a commanding 2-0 match advantage, one too steep for the Salukis to overcome.Â
2-1 was the latest SIU held a lead in the third set. An 8-0 run from Xavier put them ahead for good, sweeping the Salukis, the first time Southern has been swept this season.Â
Despite the sweep, Head Coach Brittany Harry was happy with her team's response to Xavier's play style.
"Xavier is a really well-disciplined team and they run a very fast tempo offense that we haven't seen this year," Harry said. "I thought our team handled the speed really well."
Harry said it was a "hitters day" on the stat sheet, but the difference in the match was Xavier's approach.
"Even though we went into the third set hitting .364 as a team, Xavier put a lot more service pressure on us disrupting our first contact which resulted in some really messy errors early that we just couldn't recover from."
Kelly Franklin capped her best weekend of the season with 12 kills in three sets, hitting .455 in the process.
"Kelly was automatic from the right side," Harry said.
