FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - After falling behind 2-0, Southern Illinois Women's Volleyball rallied to win a crucial third set to keep the match alive before falling in four sets to Arkansas State Friday, Sept. 19, at the Razorback Invitational.Â
A brutal loss in set one put the Salukis in a tough spot early in the match. Annabelle Sulish tallied one of her seven kills in the opening frame to make it 24-20 SIU, but the Red Wolves scored the next five points and forced a win-by-two situation, one that Arkansas State would pull off by a score of 29-27.
Sulish's resurgence did not go unnoticed by Head Coach Brittany Harry.
"AB had a really nice bounce back match tonight, leading us with 17 kills," Harry said. "She took some really gutsy swings that paid off for us."
The Red Wolves never trailed in set two, putting Southern's backs against the wall quickly in a match that had early life.
The Salukis showed heart in set three, their most efficient of the night. In a balanced effort, Southern held a slight advantage throughout the set and capped off the win with a clutch block from Ella Swansiger.
Jillian Shaneyfelt put together another solid performance on defense, adding 21 digs and giving the Saluki offense even more chances to reset.
"I thought Jilly had a nice night of defense to give us a lot of second-chance opportunities in transition," Harry said.
After hitting just .063 in the third set, Arkansas State found its footing and delivered the knockout punch while never trailing in the fourth and final set.
Despite this being the fourth loss in a row, Harry acknowledged the high level of competition and was proud of Southern's showing this time around.
"Arkansas State is a really good team, and I think our team showed a lot of growth from last night's match with Arkansas in terms of manufacturing points."
