Recap | SIU falls to Eastern Illinois in Saluki Bash finale

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois Women's Volleyball fell in five sets to Eastern Illinois to end the 2025 Saluki Bash Saturday in Carbondale. The Salukis held a 2-1 match lead, but could not hang on as the Panthers came back to win set four, and pulled away to close the match in the winner-take-all fifth set.
The Salukis had lost six straight sets to Eastern Illinois before Saturday's contest, but came out strong and never trailed in set one.Â
Larissa Seger began her career day with four kills and three aces in set one, powering Southern to a 1-0 match lead.
Eastern Illinois flipped it on the Salukis in set two, jumping out to a 10-3 lead and never looking back, evening up the match after a dominant 25-15 set win.
Early aces and costly errors from EIU gave the Dawgs new life in set three, taking advantage of those mistakes and going up 2-1 with a chance to win in set four.
Set four was the most intense frame of the day, with the teams trading leads until the Panthers kept their hopes alive by scoring the final four points and sending the match into a fifth set. Five of the Salukis' six matches have gone into the fifth set so far this season.
A quick 6-0 run for the Panthers was all the momentum they needed in set five, as Lilli Amettis' four kills in the first seven points sucked the life out of the Banterra Center, and EIU cruised to a 15-9 win to take the match, its fourth straight in the series.
Seger set SIU career-highs with 15 kills and four aces, with libero Jillian Shaneyfelt setting a career-high of her own with 24 digs.
UP NEXT
Southern Illinois will continue non-conference play with a trip to Oakland University for the Golden Grizzly Invite beginning Friday in Rochester, Mich.
