CARBONDALE, Ill. – After concluding the home portion of their schedule this past weekend, Southern Illinois swim and dive had a trio of athletes earn weekly honors from the conference on Wednesday. Olivia Herron was named the Women's Swimmer of the Week, Willem Huggins the Men's Swimmer of the Week, and Lucas Lauzon was the Men's Diver of the Week.
It was a record-breaking weekend for Herron. On Friday, during SIU's 208.5-50.5 win over McKendree, the senior was a part of the winning 200-medley relay team while also winning the 200-butterfly and 400-IM events. Both of Herron's times in those two events (1:58.54 and 4:12.81) were Southern records, and her performance in the 400-IM reset the Missouri Valley Conference record as well. Then, in Southern's 183.5-75.5 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday, Herron helped the 400-medley relay team win their event while also securing individual wins in the 100- and 200-breaststroke and the 200-IM. This is Herron's fifth Swimmer of the Week title this season.
Huggins secures his second Swimmer of the Week title this year after helping SIU defeat McKendree 193-107 on Friday. The sophomore contributed to the 200-medley and 400-free relay teams win, and took individual gold medals in the 100- and 200-backstroke.
Lauzon earned two first-place finishes at Friday's meet versus McKendree, as the Chesterton, Indiana, native grabbed first in both the 1- and 3-meter dive. This is the reigning MVC Freshman Diver of the Year's first career Diver of the Week award.
Herron and Huggins' wins bring SIU's Swimmer of the Week total up to 12 this season, while Lauzon is the second Diver of the Week Southern has had this year following Oliver Mebs' win in November.
