Salukis Steal Set from Panthers, Fall in Four
10/10/2026 | 10:00:00 | Women's Volleyball
CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki Women's Volleyball team battled hard against the MVC-leading Northern Iowa Panthers on Saturday at Davies Gym.
Set one opened up with the Panthers powering their way past the Salukis. After falling down 7-0, the Salukis were not ready to throw in the towel on set one. The Salukis got on the board and the Saluki crowd woke up as well. The Salukis were ready to play and the Davies Crazies were rallying behind their team. The Salukis brought it back and continued to fight. With the Panthers on set point, the Salukis did not back down. Despite the energy in Davies and the fight in the Dawgs, the Panthers ended up taking set one by a score of 25-17.
Set two was one to remember. After falling in set one, the Salukis knew it was time to make a statement - and they did. Apart from trailing early in the set, set two was an all-out battle. The Salukis had all the momentum, even though they dropped set one. The support from the Saluki faithful was clearly impacting the play from Southern. SIU continued to battle, leaving it all on the floor. In a moment that surprised everybody, the Salukis were the first to twenty-five and took set two. It was UNI's first set loss since September 19th, and the first set they have lost in Missouri Valley Conference play. The Salukis took set two by a narrow score of 25-23.
The third set opened up with the Salukis continuing to play phenomenal volleyball alongside the support from Saluki nation. SIU grew an early 7-2 lead and were feeling good. But, Northern Iowa stormed back and went on a 19-4 scoring run, giving them a 21-11 advantage in set three. Despite the great start to set three and the victory in set two, UNI picked up where they left off and came back in set three. UNI took the set 25-13.
The fourth and final set saw the same story as set one. The Panthers grew a lead early, but the Dawgs did not back down. They continued to fight and strung together a few small scoring runs, but were not able to overcome the early deficit. The Panthers sealed set four and the match on a service ace from Reese Booth. Set four ended 25-15, UNI.
Head Coach Brittany Harry said, "We lost in four sets to a very good UNI team, but winning the second set showed we are capable of competing at that level. We just need to learn how to sustain it and minimize the unforced errors."
