EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - After a back-and-forth offensive showcase early, SIU could not create enough runs or stop a flurry from SIUE in a 16-6 loss to the Cougars Tuesday night in Edwardsville. The game was ended via run rule after the eighth inning.

Both offenses came out firing, with Kye Watson and Cecil Lofton going yard to put SIU up 3-0 in the top of the first. The Cougars got a run back on a solo home run from Mack Mitchell.

Every time Southern scored, SIUE had an answer. Jaden Flores ripped an RBI triple in the top of the second and was brought home on Watson's second RBI with a sacrifice fly.

The Cougars responded with three runs on their own, officially putting pressure on the Saluki offense, who would only score one other time on an RBI single from Tim Simay in the top of the third.

From that point onward, SIU would not cross the plate again, and SIUE would score at least one run in every inning, including a burst of nine runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, which were enough to end the game early in the eighth frame at 16-6.

It was a tough night for the Salukis all around, who were run-ruled for the second time this season.

Southern comes back home for a three-game set with Southern Indiana beginning Friday at Itchy Jones Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
