Five Salukis Named to MVC Scholar-Athlete Team

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Five Southern Illinois baseball student-athletes were named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, the league announced Monday. Andrew Evans, Julio Guerrero, Meade Johnson, Dylan Petrey and Gabe Petrucelli were selected to the team this season.
Evans has been one of The Valley's best starting pitchers and leads SIU with a 2.40 ERA in 14 starts this season. The Olathe, Kan., native ranks first in the MVC with 84 strikeouts and a 1.13 WHIP. He holds a 3.5 GPA with a University Studies major.
Guerrero leads the Salukis in several offensive categories despite missing time in the middle of the season. He has a .306 batting average, eight home runs, 37 RBIs, and a .551 slugging percentage (9th in MVC). He also paces the Salukis with 19 stolen bases, third in The Valley. The junior from Caracas, Venezuela, sports a 4.0 GPA in Sport Administration.
Johnson made 13 appearances, pitching 41.0 innings in the regular season for Southern. After beginning the year primarily as a starter, Johnson has since bolstered the bullpen, collecting three saves and 18 strikeouts in 9.2 innings pitched. He has a 3.8 GPA and is majoring in Human Sciences.
Like Johnson, Petrey is pitching his best heading into the tournament. The Pingree Grove, Ill., native has a 1.80 ERA over his last nine appearances with a .208 opponent batting average. This marks his second appearance on the MVC's Scholar-Athlete list after being named to the Second Team in 2025. He has a 3.75 GPA in Industrial Management and Applied Engineering.
Petrucelli ranks second on the Salukis with a .301 batting average this season and has been scorching as of late, hitting .405 over his last 10 games. The second baseman holds a 3.84 GPA in University Studies.
