CARBONDALE, Ill. - Early Saluki errors opened the offensive floodgates for Indiana State, who cruised to a 14-3 victory over Southern Illinois Sunday, May 3, at Itchy Jones Stadium.
Three of Indiana State's four runs were unearned after a dropped fly ball, putting SIU in a quick 4-0 hole.
With a run already across in the top of the third, an error on a sacrifice bunt was key, eventually doubling the Sycamores' run total.
Already down 8-0, the Salukis had an opportunity to put a crooked number on the board with the bases loaded in the third. Carson Seeman was called out of the Indiana State bullpen and worked out of the jam unscathed.
Kristian Sprawling got Southern on the board with his second home run of the weekend, a two-run shot for his fifth of the season.
Southern continued to put traffic on the basepaths, but an infield single from Gabe Petrucelli in the sixth was the third and final run it pushed across. ISU's defense was on point from beginning to end, turning five double plays.
Dylan Petrey gave SIU a lift in relief, tying a Division I career-high with 4.2 innings pitched and striking out a season-high six batters. He gave up just one run before being removed with two outs in the seventh.
Indiana State put the game away with five runs in the ninth.
Charlie Miller (L, 0-2) took the loss for the Salukis as they fell to 18-28 on the season and 9-9 in Missouri Valley Conference play. Needing to place in the top six to qualify for the MVC Tournament, the Salukis are tied with Belmont for the final spot.Â
