Fiegel, Sanogo named MVFC Players of the Week

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Linebacker Ben Fiegel and defensive end Ibrahim Sanogo were honored by the Missouri Valley Football Conference Monday following Southern Illinois University's 22-18 win at Samford last week.
Fiegel, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound junior from Batavia, Ill., was named the Valley Football Defensive Player of the Week after leading the No. 25 Salukis (1-1) with 10 stops at Samford. Fiegel had 1.5 tackles for loss and the team's first interception of the season in the fourth quarter.Â
Fiegel's interception with 13:03 to play at Pete Hanna Stadium set up the Salukis' game-winning drive at the Bulldog 23-yard line. Quarterback Jake Curry's 18-yard run to the 3 set up Lem Wash's first touchdown of the season. Seth Adams' extra point with 10:50 left put SIU up 22-15.Â
Fiegel's two fumble recoveries at West Florida still lead the FCS. He has 18 tackles in two games this season.
Sanogo and defensive tackle Amir Dwight helped put the Salukis up 9-0 with their first safety of the season. The two dropped Samford quarterback Gabarri Johnson for a 6-yard loss in the end zone on the Bulldogs' second drive of the game. Sanogo, the MVFC Newcomer of the Week, finished the game with five tackles and two quarterback hurries. His 3.5 tackles for loss included 2.5 sacks.Â
SIU had 10 tackles for loss in the win.Â
