Since joining the division I ranks in 1966, Southern Illinois has been one of the more successful and most frequent participants in the NCAA post-season tournament.
The Salukis have made five trips to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. The 1968 team, coached by Joe Lutz, and the 1971 team, coached by Itch Jones, each finished as national runners-up. SIU lost both of those series to Southern California.
Jones led SIU to the CWS three times in six years. He led the Salukis back in the CWS in 1974 and again in 1977 with each team finishing in third place.
As of 2022, SIU is tied for 30th all-time in most CWS appearances (5). The Salukis have reached the NCAA Tournament 14 times in their Division One history (see chart below).
