Sam Ebersold began his player development role with the Southern Illinois basketball program in September of 2023 but is no stranger to the program. Ebersold joined the Salukis in 2021 as a team manager before serving as a graduate assistant for two years.
In his player development role, Ebersold focuses on building players' skillsets, mindsets, and habits. Off the court, Ebersold helps with strategic game planning, building scouting reports, and recruiting.
From 2020-2022 as a graduate Assistant Ebersold keyed in on player development, scouting, and being a practice player. After Graduating from Southern IL in May of 2023 with his master’s in human sciences, Ebersold went to PHX Arizona to work for Phil Beckner.
In PHX Arizona Ebersold helped assist Phil Beckner and staff in all facets of Driven Basketball’s operation. On-court development, breaking down and creating training edits, Pro Day Workouts, and even selling off Action Figures on eBay. Beckner credits Ebersold for, “Being an expert at going hard. He gets things done.” Ebersold also helped head up the support staff at Formula Zero Pro camp and Elite Camp. Damian Lillard’s week-long camp that included 18 NBA players, 20 high school and 20 college players.
All summer Ebersold assisted in workouts with high-level players including; Damian Lillard, Anfernee Simmons, Cam Johnson, Caleb Love, Doug McDermott, Collin Sexton, Nassir Little, Darius Bazley, and Ochai Agbaji. This gave Ebersold 1st hand experience on what it is like to develop pros; the skillsets, mindsets, and habits that go into becoming one of the best in the world.
Prior to being with SIU Ebersold played Division III basketball at UW-Oshkosh. In 2017-2018 UW-Oshkosh went on to take runner-up in the national tournament. They weren’t satisfied, Ebersold who headed up player development in the off-season was a part of a group that wanted more. The next season OSKOSH posted a 29-3 record, a 21-game win streak, and capped it off with a National Championship. They swept the NCAA tournament by storm, winning on an average margin of 15.8 points, an NCAA Division III Record. Ebersold earned the “Most Outstanding Teammate Award” voted by his teammates.
Prior to attending Oshkosh, in August 2016 Ebersold attended the University of Alabama where he attempted to walk on. While Avery Johnson and staff went in another direction with their walk-on selection Ebersold wanted to be a part of the program. As a freshman Ebersold quickly impacted the program. Ebersold was the scout team point guard, helped work out players, and assisted in recruiting efforts for the No. 3 recruiting class in the country with Collin Sexton, Herb Jones, Alex Reece, and John Petty.
