CARBONDALE, Ill. – Fridays will be even more spirit-filled than usual beginning this fall at Southern Illinois University.
SIU Interim Chancellor Brad Colwell signed a proclamation designating the last day of each work week as "Saluki Spirit Fridays", encouraging faculty, staff, students, alumni and supporters to wear clothes that bear the colors and logos of SIU.
The proclamation was an initiative spearheaded by the Saluki Spirit Committee. The newly-formed committee is made up of University staff, students and community leaders brought together in the hopes of increasing school spirit while also raising awareness of Saluki events throughout the community and on campus.
The Saluki Spirit Committee plans to also reach out to local businesses in the hopes of collaborating on future endeavors and a banner design contest for campus organizations is also in the works.
Southern Illinois University begins the 2016 fall semester on Monday, August 22. The Saluki football team opens the home portion of their 2016 schedule when they take on the SEMO Redhawks on Saturday, Sept. 10, with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
