Hazel ran a lifetime-best 45.70 in the 400m to advance to the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Warren Hazel punched his ticket to Eugene, Ore. for the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships on day two of the NCAA West Preliminary Round Friday in Austin, Texas.Â
The sophomore sprinter from Old Roads, St. Kitts ran a lifetime-best 45.70 to finish fourth in his heat of the 400m. He placed 10th overall, and was one of five to advance to the national meet from his heat, a grouping that included Texas A&M's Fred Kerley, who broke the collegiate record with his time of 43.70. In addition to setting a new collegiate record, Kerley's mark ranks him seventh on the all-time world top-10 list.Â
Hazel, who qualified for the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 400m earlier this year, will try to become the first Saluki since Michael Franks in 1985 to earn All-America status in the 400m. Hazel gained significant ground on Franks' school record time of 44.94, as Hazel jumped from fifth to third on SIU's all-time list with his mark from Friday. The two-time MVC Champion came back and ran 20.99 in the 200m, which was good for fifth in his heat and 25th overall.
Seniors Chad Weaver and Nathan Schuck wrapped up their collegiate careers Friday, competing in the pole vault. Weaver concluded a stellar senior campaign in which he won both the MVC Indoor and Outdoor pole vault titles with a 25th place finish. He cleared 16'-10.75" (5.15m) on his second attempt at the height. Schuck, competing at his third West Prelims, finished 29th with a clearance of 16'-4.75" (5.00m).
First-time regional qualifers Bri'Anna Branch and Tyjuana Eason will shift their focus to the 4x100 relay after racing in the 200m Friday night. Branch ran 23.84 to finish 33rd while Eason ran 24.33 to place 41st.
Jared Kern and Kyle Kling threw in the shot put competition as well, but neither were able to record a mark.Â
Day three of the NCAA West Prelims begins for SIU at 1 p.m. with the men's discus. Southern has four student-athletes set to compete tomorrow, including five-time All-American Kyle Landon.Â
