On the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary, Saluki high jumper Kyle Landon secured his spot at the national meet in Eugene, Ore., Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.Â
The top-12 finishers in their respective events at the NCAA East and West Preliminaries advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships held June 7-10 in Eugene, Ore.
A five-time All-American in the high jump, Landon earned his third trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the high jump. After passing on his opening two bars, Landon proceeded to clear the next three heights on first attempts. He was one of only three athletes to record zero misses, and was one of just six to clear 7'-1.75" (2.18m), which locked up his spot in Eugene.
Several Salukis fell short of qualifying for the national meet. The Saluki women's 4x100 relay team, which won Southern's first Missouri Valley Conference title in the event since 1989, finished 14th Saturday with a time of 44.65. The quartet of Mystique Thompson, Shafiqua Maloney, Tyjuana Eason and Bri'Anna Branch missed advancing to Eugene by .06. Kyle Kling took 43rd in discus with a mark of 160'-0" (48.76m), while Ricky Hurley competed in the discus but was not able to record a legal mark at his first regional meet.
Overall, SIU will be represented by three student athletes at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Freya Block will throw the hammer, while Warren Hazel will run the 400m and Landon will compete in the high jump.
