Warren Hazel has been selected by the St. Kitts and Nevis Amateur Athletic Association (SKNAAA) to represent the Caribbean country at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London, England, from Aug. 4 through Aug. 12.
Each country has the ability to enter one male or female athlete into selected events at the IAAF World Championships and St. Kitts and Nevis chose Hazel after his most recent performance at the Blue Marlin Track Classic in Nassau, Bahamas on Saturday, July 22.
The two-time MVC Champion broke his own national record in the 400m at the meet. The soon-to-be-senior sprinter ran a personal-best 45.68 to finish third in his heat and fourth overall.
Qualifying heats of the 400m at the IAAF World Championships are set to begin in London on Aug. 5 at 5:03 a.m. CST.
Hazel won't be the only Saluki competing at the World Championships. Gwen Berry and DeAnna Price are two of the 77 Olympians who will represent the United States of America at London Stadium. Both will throw the hammer on Aug. 5 beginning at 4:35Â a.m. CST.
Speaking of international competition, soon-to-be sophomore Shafiqua Maloney ran the 400m at the Pan-American U-20 Track and Field Championships in Lima, Peru. Representing St. Vincent and Grenadines, Maloney finished fourth in her heat with a time of 56.52 to advance to the 400m final. Once there, she clocked a time of 55.92 to finish eighth.
