Makenzie Silvey named MVC Newcomer of the Week

Southern Illinois freshman guard Makenzie Silvey was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Silvey averaged 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals in a pair of MVC wins over the weekend. The Glen Carbon, Ill. knocked down 48% (12-of-25) of her shots from the field, including 56.3% (9-of-16) of her attempts from three-point range.Â
Silvey finished with 16 points, three assists and two steals in SIU's 62-46 win over Loyola and followed with a career-high 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting from three-point range in Southern's 74-63 win over Valparaiso on Sunday. Silvey also set career-bests in rebounds (6) and three-pointers made (5) in the victory over the Crusaders and has now reached double figures in 11 of SIU's 19 games this season.
This is the fourth time this season that a Saluki has claimed Newcomer of the Week honors. Abby Brockmeyer has earned the award three times already this season. It marks the first time since the 2006-07 season that SIU has had multiple players earn Newcomer of the Week recognition during the same season.
Silvey and the Salukis return to the SIU Arena on Friday, Jan. 26 for their Blackout Cancer Game against Missouri State. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
