CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Sophomore Nicole Martin poured in 22 points for the Southern Illinois women's basketball team in a hard-fought 71-63 loss at Northern Iowa inside the McLeod Center.
The Salukis battled all the way back against the Panthers, as Southern overcame a 19 point second quarter deficit to take its first lead of the game, 45-44, on a 3-ball by Kylie Giebelhausen with 1:20 to play in the third quarter.
The Panthers refused to relinquish its lead, however, as UNI made five of its first six attempts from the field in the fourth quarter and held the Salukis without a field goal for a 4:30 stretch to seal the win.
The Salukis were led by Martin, who was 9-of-17 from the field for a game-high 22 points. It marked the eighth-straight game in which the Jefferson City, Mo. native has reached double figures, and is her third 20-plus point output of the season. Kylie Giebelhausen joined Martin in double figures with 14 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
UNI was led by Ellie Howell and Mikaela Morgan, who scored 17 and 16 points, respectively. The Panthers also held a significant edge on the glass, as UNI out-rebounded SIU, 40-to-25 behind 11 rebounds from Megan Maahs.
The Panthers roared out of the gates to the tune of a 12-2 lead, as the Salukis struggled to find their rhythm offensively. Southern opened the contest just 1-of-7 from the field and had five turnovers in the opening frame. Celina VanHyfte got SIU to within eight, 14-6, with her second basket of the game, but back-to-back Panther baskets, including Heidi Hillyard's jumper at the buzzer, gave UNI an 18-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
UNI built its largest lead of the game at 27-8 with a 9-2 run to open the second quarter. The Salukis returned the favor with a 10-2 spurt of their own, keyed by a pair of three-point plays from Martin. Martin scored 10 of her 14 first half points in the quarter and was 5-of-6 from the field in the frame. SIU notched just two turnovers in the quarter and a layup by Martin with :17 to go in the first half got Southern to within eight, 34-26.
The Salukis shot 69.2% (9-of-13) in the third quarter to take their first lead of the game, 45-44. UNI's Morgan answered with a three of her own, and a layup by Silvey with :40 to go in the third tied the contest, 47-47.
A fast break layup off a steal by Martin gave SIU a brief 49-47 lead to start the fourth, but UNI countered with an 8-0 run to build a lead it never relinquished.
The Salukis are back in action on Friday, Feb. 9 when they host the Illinois State Redbirds at the SIU Arena. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
