MOLINE, Ill. - The no. 1 seed Drake Bulldogs pulled away late to secure a 68-59 win over the no. 4 seed Southern Illinois Salukis in the Missouri Valley Conference Semifinals Saturday inside the TaxSlayer Center.
SIU led for more than half of the game (23:20), but the defending MVC Champs were too much down the stretch. The Bulldogs shot 50% from the field in the second half and drained six three-pointers, which they seemed to dial up whenever the Salukis gained momentum.
"All year long Ive never questioned this team's heart," fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "I think we have outstanding effort and heart. I don't think we always do everything right but we keep battling. This is another game that is very indicative of that. We battled and battled and Drake is an outstanding team. (Drake) is a great team that should get a great seed in the NCAA Tournament whether they win tomorrow or not."
Southern was led in scoring by Makenzie Silvey, who finished with 17 points, three boards and two assists. Nicole Martin tallied 13 points and four rebounds, while Abby Brockmeyer added 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and a block.
Kylie Giebelhausen, playing in her final game as a Saluki, broke the school record for career minutes played in the third quarter and ends her career having played 4,154 career minutes.
"Kylie is our lone senior and she has been a great mentor and a role model for these kids on this team," Stein said. "I wish i had her for four more years. I told her the only record I could help her with was the one she broke today for minutes played but the rest of it was all up to her."
The two-time All-MVC selection finished her final game as a Saluki with five points, five rebounds, five assists, three blocks and a steal in 39 minutes.
"We gave it our all and I gave it my all. It's sad," Giebelhausen said of her career coming to a close. "This past four years- its hard giving up something you love. For how young our team was we fought and we did everything we could. It's hard going out losing but we played them the best we could. I think that's the smallest margin we've lost to them by this year and we had the game close the whole time. We tried our best and just came up short."
SIU held Drake to just eight first quarter points and led 18-8 at the end of the first. Drake's eight points were the fewest it has scored in a quarter this season. The Bulldogs used a 14-3 run over the final 6:50 of the first half to take their first lead of the contest and went into halftime ahead, 29-26.
SIU opened the second half with five-straight points to wrestle back the lead, 31-29, and led by five (38-33) after a jumper by Giebelhausen with 4:17 to play in the third. The Bulldogs outscored the Salukis, 15-4 to close the period and built a lead that proved insurmountable.
Southern cut the lead to five on a put back by Silvey with 7:07 to play in regulation, but a pair of Drake three-pointers again gave the Bulldogs a double-digit lead. SIU again got to within five after a pair of Martin free throws with :55 seconds to play, but Drake made 4-of-4 free throws to end the contest and seal the win.
The Salukis conclude the 2017-18 season with a 17-14 record and an 11-7 record in MVC play.
