The East Peoria, Ill. native becomes the sixth three-time MVC Scholar-Athlete honoree in program history.
ST. LOUIS - Senior Kylie Giebelhausen was named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team, the conference announced Tuesday.
Giebelhausen earned First Team Scholar-Athlete honors after posting a cumulative 3.81 grade point average while majoring in exercise science. Giebelhausen is now a three-time MVC Scholar Athlete selection, as she earned second team honors last season and honorable mention laurels following her sophomore campaign.
The East Peoria, Ill. native has started all 29 games this season for the Salukis, and a school record 121-straight games dating back to third game of her freshman campaign. She is second on the team, and 11th in the league in scoring at 11.6 points per game and is top-10 in the MVC in both steals (6th, 1.4/game) and blocks (8th, 1.1/game). She has scored in double-figures in 16 games this season, including three games with 20-plus points. In Southern's 88-86 double overtime win over Valparaiso on Feb. 16, Giebelhausen scored 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out four assists in a career-high 48 minutes. Giebelhausen earned All-MVC First Team honors last season and is currently ninth on SIU's all-time scoring list with 1,273 career points.
Giebelhausen joins Beth Hasheider, Jayme Sweere, Erica Smith, Erin Pauk and Rishonda Napier as the only three-time scholar-athlete selections in program history. 21 different Salukis have earned MVC Scholar-Athlete recognition since the 1992-93 season.
The criteria for the scholar-athlete team balloting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves, have played at least 75-percent of a team's games, and must carry at least a 3.20 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
SIU is back in action on Friday, March 9 against the Indiana State Sycamores. Tickets to "Hoops in the Heartland" are available at mvcquadcities.com.
