SIU advances to tomorrow’s MVC Tournament semifinals to take on top-seeded Drake.
MOLINE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois women's basketball team erased an 18-point third quarter deficit to stun the fifth-seeded Indiana State Sycamores, 69-67, Friday afternoon and advance to the MVC Tournament semifinals.
The Sycamores (11-19, 9-9 MVC) went ahead 57-39 with :25 seconds to play in the third quarter before an up and under by Abby Brockmeyer cut SIU's deficit down to 16 at the end of three. Southern outscored Indiana State, 28-10 in the fourth quarter utilizing a nine-person rotation to complete the comeback. It was the largest deficit that SIU has overcome in 16 years, as the Salukis also came back from being down 18 points to defeat Tennessee Tech on Nov. 30, 2002.
"Our kids played incredibly hard," fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "I felt like nerves affected us all game. I loved the fight in our team and I've loved our fight all year long. I have to give props to my assistants- they were the ones who talked about going offense/defense (in the fourth quarter) and I think that changed the complexion of the game. I have a great staff and they did an incredible job of suggesting that. I definitely think it changed the flow of the game."
Southern struggled offensively to open the contest, as the Salukis tried to work the ball into their post players to no avail. The Sycamores, meanwhile, amassed 15 first-half turnovers and tallied nine steals. Kylie Giebelhausen was stuck in a slump of her own, as she had just three points on 1-of-5 shooting at halftime.
But the two-time All-MVC First Team selection caught fire with her senior season hanging in the balance. With Southern trailing by 16 to enter the fourth, Giebelhausen made 5-of-6 from the field in the frame, including 2-of-2 from downtown for a game-high 20 points. In total, Giebelhausen accounted for half (14-of-28) of SIU's fourth quarter points. She also finished a rebound shy of a double-double and added three assists and two steals in 39 minutes.
"I'm pretty sure I wasn't ready for this to be my last game," Giebelhausen said. "It was frustrating, I wasn't hitting in the first half and I don't think anyone was. We were getting some good shots but they were just going in and out. It was frustrating and it kinda showed with how we got down. I'm just proud that we made that run during the fourth quarter."
And while Giebelhausen led the charge, it was a complete team effort for the Salukis. Nicole Martin had 11 points, including her second career three-pointer that got Southern to within three late in the fourth, to go along with eight rebounds and a career-high five steals. Abby Brockmeyer tallied 11 points, four boards, a block and a steal while Makenzie Silvey added 11 points and four assists.
Southern also got significant contributions from its bench as SIU brought in defensive help in the form of Rachel Pudlowski, Celina VanHyfte and Brittney Patrick at nearly every dead ball during its fourth quarter comeback. The trio combined for two assists, two rebounds, three steals and a block over the final ten minutes of play and the Salukis held the Sycamores to just 1-of-11 from the field in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory.
"I've coached a long time- thats probably one of the best, if not the best," Stein said of her team's comeback and where it ranks during her 20-plus year coaching career. "The reason why I love it is because of all the kids that participated. I think thats huge. Sometimes you can do it with a seven person rotation but we did it with everybody."
Ashley Taia, who did not play against SIU the first time this season that the two teams met and was held to just six points in the second meeting between the schools, finished with 13 points, 10 of which came in the third quarter, to lead the Sycamores.
With the win, the Salukis have now won eight of their last nine over the Sycamores and complete a three-game season-sweep of an opponent for the first time since Southern went 3-0 vs. Wichita State during the 1995-96 season.
The Salukis advance to take on the No. 1 seeded Drake Bulldogs tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in the MVC Tournament semifinals inside the TaxSlayer Center in Moline, Ill.
