Lexington, Ky. -
Southern Illinois University (7-4, 1-0 in MVC play) lost matches to James Madison University and Austin Peay State University at the Conference Challenge Tournament on Saturday, September 16, in Lexington, Kentucky.
The Salukis dropped the morning match 1-3 to James Madison University (6-3) by a 13-15, 15-6, 10-15, 8-15 score. The match was the first ever meeting between the two schools.
"We decided to beat Kentucky yesterday, but we were lethargic and didn't come to play this morning. We tried to pick it up late in the match but it wasn't enough," Saluki Head Coach Sonya Locke said. "I expect us to play hard all the time."
Kristie Kemner (14 kills, 12 digs), Tara Cains (13 kills, 13 digs), and Jenny Noel (11 kills, 14 digs) each notched double-double performances. Megan Baumstark added 45 assists and nine digs in the loss.
In the afternoon match, the Salukis lost a tough five-game match to Austin Peay State University (6-5). The 7-15, 15-8, 15-12, 6-15, 16-18 loss dropped SIU to 2-3 all-time against Austin Peay State. SIU had match point late at 14-13 in game five, but couldn't close out the match.
"We had match point at 14-13 in the final game and didn't score. We made too many errors and that was the difference down the stretch. We out hit them, outblocked them and out dug them, but we made the late errors," Locke stated. "Our subs helped us win the two games we won in the match, they did a good job. We just didn't have the same overall intensity today."
Tara Cains (17 kills, 13 digs), Jenny Noel (13 kills, 13 digs), Kelly Harman (11 kills, 11 digs), and Megan Baumstark (55 assists, 14 digs) posted outstanding double performances. Lisa Ciucci (9 kills, 16 digs) and Lindsey Schultz (9 kills, 8 block assists) also added strong outings for the Salukis.
Southern Illinois will be on the road next week to face back-to-back MVC foes. SIU will square off against Illinois State September 22, and Indiana State September 23.
"I think we've proven in the early part of this season that we can win on the road and I hope we can be consistent and play well in these MVC road games," Locke added.
