Louisville, Kty. -
Southern Illinois University Carbondale (6-8) was beaten 12-4 by the University of Louisville (11-9) on Saturday, March 10. The Salukis were outscored 7-0 after cutting the cardinal lead to 5-4 in the top of the fourth. SIU falls to 6-8 with the loss.
"We weren't very good today. We didn't pitch well, made three errors, and didn't run the bases well," said Dan Callahan, Saluki head coach. "On a positive note, Cory Newman jumped into the leadoff spot and had a good day and Ryan Murray had a key hit from the ninth spot in the lineup to drive in runs."
Saluki starter Bill Clayton (2-1) lasted only two innings, allowing five runs, (four earned) on one hit and five walks. Clayton struck out two in the loss.
"Clayton didn't have his command today. He walked five in two innings. Our pitching was discouraging. We got to within one run (5-4) in the top of the fourth and Victor Hockett gives up a hit, throws away a pick-off play, and allows another hit to give Louisville a 6-4 lead. We couldn?t sustain anything on the mound," added Callahan.
Cory Newman (2-for-5, double), Ryan Murray (1-for-2, 3-RBIs, double, two walks), and Sal Frisella (2-for-4, RBI) led the Saluki hitting attack.
Louisville's Denny Williams (3-2) pitched six and two third innings to get the win. Williams allowed six hits, four earned runs, four walks and struck out four.
The Salukis will wrap up the series with Louisville on Sunday, March 11, at 1 p.m.
