Las Cruces, N.M. -
The University of Oregon used a three-run rally in the top of the sixth inning to defeat Southern Illinois University Carbondale by a score of 4-1 Friday in the 24th Annual Troy Cox Invitational at Presley Askew Field.
Oregon took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a single by Alyssa Laux which scored Lisa Wangler who had previously reached on an error by SIU shortstop Haley Viefhaus.
SIU then answered in the bottom half of the frame after Kendra Moore was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Amanda Rexroat then walked sending Moore to second before Marta Viefhaus belted an RBI-double to score Moore and knot the game at 1-1.
Two scoreless innings later, the middle of the Ducks' lineup went to work as their three, four, and six hitters in Laux, Triawn Custer, and Missy Coe all doubled to spark the three-run spurt. With two on and one out in SIU's final at-bat, Julie Meier then lined into a double play which ended the game at 4-1.
M. Viefhaus and Erin Stremsterfer each went 2-for-3 to lead SIU. Stremsterfer (0-1) also took the loss on the mound as she went the distance to strike out nine batters in her first start of the year. In addition, Stremsterfer allowed seven hits and was touched for two earned runs. The Salukis also had four errors in the game, three of which came from H. Viefhaus.
SIU, now 1-2 on the season, will continue play in the Troy Cox Invitational tonight when the Dawgs square off against Baylor at 7:45 p.m.
