Carbondale, Ill. -
Senior Erin Stremsterfer threw a perfect game through six and two-thirds innings while Amanda Rexroat had two hits and three RBIs to lead Southern Illinois University to a pair of wins over Bradley (2-0) and Butler (3-2) Saturday in the Southern Classic at IAW Fields.
Stremsterfer was nearly untouchable in the first game against Bradley as she fanned six of the Braves' first nine batters of the game en route to a total of 11 for the afternoon. SIU took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when three walks compliments of Braves hurler Cristin Evans gave the Salukis baserunners. With Netty Hallahan on third and Stremsterfer on second, a passed ball then enabled Hallahan to score. The Dawgs then scored another run off a pinch hit single by Andrea Harris which scored Julie Meier to cap off the 2-0 shutout.
Stremsterfer moved to 2-1 on the season as her perfect game spanned through six and two-thirds innings before a single by Annie Luttropp ruined the run with two out in the bottom of the seventh. For the game, Stremsterfer fanned 11 batters in 22 faced while allowing just one hit.
In the second game against Butler, SIU overcame a 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when a single by Rexroat scored both Stremsterfer and Haley Viefhaus. After Butler tied the game at 2-2 on an RBI-single by Cameo Wrasse in the bottom of the sixth, the Dawgs then put the Bulldogs away in the top of the seventh when another single by Rexroat drove in Netty Hallahan to give SIU the 3-2 win.
Rexroat was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in while Jenny Guenther and Tahira Saafir each added two hits. Freshman Mary Jaszczak picked up her first collegiate win on the mound throwing 5.1 innings with three strikeouts. Stremsterfer then came in to pitch the final 1.2 innings to earn her second save on the year.
SIU, now 5-4 on the year and currently on a four-game winning streak, will conclude play in the Southern Classic on Sunday, March 4, when the Dawgs take on Northern Illinois (12:30 p.m.) and Indiana (2:30 p.m.).
