Las Cruces, N.M. -
Senior Erin Stremsterfer pitched a no-hitter through eight innings to lead Southern Illinois University Carbondale to a 1-0 extra-inning win over New Mexico State Saturday in the Troy Cox Invitational at Presley Askew Field.
For Stremsterfer, the no-hit shutout marked the third of her career as the Salukis snapped a four-game losing skid.
It was a pitcher's duel through four complete innings as neither hurler allowed a hit or a run. SIU, however, ended that span as Jenny Guenther singled in the bottom of the eighth.
Following two more scoreless innings, both teams headed into the international tie breaker rule. After the Aggies failed on their try in the top half of the eighth, Stremsterfer was automatically placed on second to begin the Salukis' turn in the bottom of the frame. Katie Kloess pinch hit for Guenther and started things off with a SAC bunt which advanced Stremsterfer to third. Freshman Haley Viefhaus then followed and calmly stepped in the box to deliver a game-winning single knocking in Stremsterfer to give the Dawgs the 1-0 win.
Stremsterfer fanned nine batters in 23 faced as she moves to 1-1 on the season. The Salukis, who had just three hits, were paced by Marta Viefhaus, H. Viefhaus, and Guenther.
SIU, now 2-4 on the year, will conclude play in the Troy Cox Invitational tomorrow when the Salukis take on Iowa State at 12:15 p.m.
