Jerry Kill, head football coach at Emporia State University (Emporia, Kan.) for the past two years, has been named Southern Illinois University Carbondale's new football coach by the Salukis' Director of Athletics Paul Kowalczyk.
The announcement of Kill's hiring was made today (Wednesday, Dec. 6) by Kowalczyk following Kill's acceptance. He succeeds Jan Quarless, who was released less than three weeks ago.
"I am tremendously excited to have a head coach the caliber of Jerry Kill joining us at SIU," Kowalczyk said. "Jerry is an outstanding, up-and-coming coach who has all the values one looks for when making this type of a decision."
Kill, a native of Cheney, Kan., served seven years at Pittsburg (Kan.) State, three as defensive coordinator and four as offensive coordinator before accepting the head coaching position at Saginaw Valley State University (University Center, Mich.) in 1994.
In five years at Saginaw Valley State, Kill's teams posted an overall 38-14 record. In his first season at Emporia State, the Hornets were 5-6 and improved to 6-5 this year.
Kill, a graduate of Southwestern College (Winfield, Kan.) in 1983, is married (wife, Rebecca) and has two daughters, Krystal (13) and Tasha (9).
He will be introduced to members of the media and others at a noon meeting Thursday in room 125 of Lingle Hall on SIU's campus.
