SIU Hangs on for 65-61 Win Over Drake

Hitting on eight of 11 free throw attempts in the final 1:20 of the game, host Southern Illinois managed to hang on for a 65-61 victory in Missouri Valley Conference play Saturday night.
The Salukis, who trailed only once in the second half at 43-42 with 8:15 remaining, improved their season's record to 10-9 while Drake fell to 8-9. Both teams are 4-4 in league play.
Sophomore Kent Williams led SIU in scoring with 16 points while Drake's Andre Sola claimed game honors with 19.
Drake lost its 41st consecutive MVC road game despite having a slight edge of one field goal over the Salukis. The Bulldogs also grabbed 35 rebounds to SIU's 32, but sent the Salukis to the free throw line 28 times where the hosts collected 21 points.
The Salukis seemingly had the game under control when they led 60-52 with just 1:00 remaining, but Drake rallied to score six of the next nine points and pulled with four at 63-59. The Bulldogs slipped even closer with :02 on the clock when Sola scored to make it 64-61.
SIU plays its next game Wednesday night at Creighton and is at Evansville next Saturday night.
